As a college student, you are usually on a tight budget during your years in college. You only have enough money for food, or to put towards your tuition and school loans. Since college is expensive and it takes up a lot of time, it is important to try and make some extra money on the side. It will help with stress levels, and make their lifestyle much manageable.

Have you heard of affiliate marketing? What about Wealthy Affiliate? Basically, e-commerce is HUGE these days, and companies need individuals (affiliates, like you) to help promote and direct that traffic to their site. When a purchase is made through you, you get paid a commission. That’s all it really is.

Basically, college students are making money online with affiliate marketing, and with Wealthy Affiliate. Some even dropped out of college just to pursue it and made it their full time jobs. Affiliate marketing is worldwide; there is ALWAYS a demand for services and products, even through current tough times.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Someone needs information about cat behavior and wants to understand why their furry feline is behaving the way it is. He/she then goes to a search engine to search for ‘cat behavior’. As the individual is browsing, they come across your site. They click on your link, find what they are looking for, make a purchase, and you get paid for it.

That’s pretty much it.

To dig a little deeper, there are MILLIONS (and I mean MILLIONS) of products for you to promote, and companies are looking for people to do just that. Let’s say you are a guitar enthusiast and you would like to promote an e-book on learning how to play metal guitar. Realistically speaking, there ARE thousands of people who want to learn without the expensive lessons. So, you find a few e-books, along with some accessories (strings, stands, apparel, etc.) and write a blog on it or even build a website dedicated to metal guitar. Visitors search, click, purchase, and you get paid commissions for each purchase. That’s…pretty…much…it.

(If you clicked on the blue text cat behavior, were you directed to another site? Was there an article explaining cat behavior and solutions? See, this is called article marketing, which is free, and one of many techniques Wealthy Affiliate teaches you how to promote and sell products. Pretty simple, huh?)

When you get out of college the first thing that most students do is look through classified ads to find a job. What they don’t know is that finding student jobs is one of the best ways to start that job search.

All across the country students are limited to entry level jobs because they lack experience. Employers look for resumes that show internship, volunteer opportunities or jobs that relate to a major. Most students show experience but it is not experience in their career.

Student jobs in your major are as easy to find as those that do something different. The first place to check is in your campus human resource department. Often they have a variety of jobs on campus that relate to a lot of different topics.

Another place to look is on student bulletin boards around campus and in the dean’s office of your major. As an example, if you are a business major, check with the dean’s office in the business department. Usually the executive assistants in those areas are asked to list any employers who call in to look for students.

Other places to check for student jobs are your career office, the online website for your college other students. Many times students know of jobs because they have turned them down and they may be a good source for you.

When you look for a job in your major make sure that you don’t overdo the balance between family, school and work. Many students fail because they take too many classes and try to work full-time.

What most students don’t know is that for every 1 credit hour they take, you will spend at least two hours in homework. This means that for a 3 credit course, you will probably have 5-6 hours outside the classroom.

If you work a full-time job, and have a family, finding 18 hours out side of that to study your course work will be difficult. It is better to either work part-time or take less coursework.

Working part or full-time and going to school will also require that the job be flexible when it comes to your classes. If you find a job in your major the employer will often be flexible with your hours.

Another idea for student jobs is to try work study. Most work study positions are tied to financial aid but often you can find something that is in your major. Check with your financial aid office if you have applied and see if this is one possibility.

When you approach a job whether it is full or part time, approach it as a professional job. You might not think that working at a fast food restaurant would call for a professional attitude but if you’re major is business it does.

Sit down and write a good cover letter and resume, then take it to your college career center for tweaking. Approach every job with your resume and cover letter and you will land a good job. Think big picture here and you will carry your student jobs into full-time, paid and professional employment.

A few years ago, I was always looking for ways to make money as a college student. I’ve learned a lot of different jobs available to students along the way, and thought I’d pass on a few.

Basically there are two kinds of jobs you can have- you can work for someone else, or start your own business.

Working for someone else is definitely the easier choice. This is what I and most of my friends did to pay for college. Here are some of the best ways we found to make some extra pizza money:

1) Get a job on campus. I can’t recommend this method highly enough! You’ll most likely have flexible hours (nice during weeks with big tests) and get paid decently (my school started at $9/hour). You also may land a nice office job where your boss will let you do your homework when things get slow.

2) Become a waiter/waitress or bartender. If you work at a decent restaurant, you can make a killing with tips during the weekend. The problem is you’re on your feet all day, some people are uber cheap, and you may have to work on the weekend to get decent tips.

3) Work retail. Probably my least favorite of the different ways to make money as a college student, it is very common to find classmates working at the Hope Depot or American Eagle.

4) Join a temp agency. These aren’t the most brain-stimulating jobs usually, but depending on the agency and your local area you can make anywhere from $8-20 an hour. The problem is the temp agency takes a cut off the top- usually a big one!

5) Get a paid internship or co-op job. Some of these pay really well, but the majority aren’t going to exactly make you rich. The best thing about these is you’ll get training and insight on what the corporate world is really like.

6) Cut grass! There are landscaping companies everywhere, and during the summer it can be good money. I’ve never really seen a girl do this, but I suppose she could if she really wanted to.

7) Special events companies. There are lots of companies that rent out equipment like inflatables or casino equipment who are always looking for more help.

Besides working for another company, there are a few companies that are pretty easy to start and don’t require much capital

1) Start a tutoring company. If you’re in college you’re obviously good with at least one subject- why not tutor a high school student or classmate for a fee? You can easily make at least $15 an hour if you’re good.

2) Mow grass on your own terms! Especially during the summer, this can be really easy to get going. The only equipment you really need is a lawn mower, hedge trimmer and pair of clippers.

3) Learn how to make money online. I know it sounds cliché, but there are thousands of people making money online using different methods, and that number is only going to keep growing. You can even start without a website, but if you do purchase one it will cost you less than $100 a year, which is ridiculously inexpensive.

While these are all great ways to make money as a college student, I’m definitely most in favor of creating a business online. The potential is unlimited, your schedule is flexible, and the harder you work the more money comes into your pocket rather than someone else’s! Whatever choice you make- good luck!

Many college students find jobs in the occupation that they are interested in becoming while others just want a part-time position. In order to find a part-time job the first thing a college student should do is go to the student counseling where they post employment opportunities. You usually can register for the type of work that you are interested in doing and check out what is available.

How you can find a job in your area

In order to find a job off campus you should check out the local newspaper in your community in the help wanted section. You can also run an ad yourself if you want to do certain things like house setting, doggie care, or taking care of lawns just as an example. One of the best ways to find employment is to go to the local fast food places like McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Pizza places and/or local restaurants. Many of these places are more than glad to hire you to work for them on a part time basis. They also offer a flexible schedule that will enable you to work around your school schedule.

Jobs for college students are found just about everywhere in a community it just takes a little bit of work to find the right job for you. Most college town shop owners will post in their window that they are looking for college students to work for them. You can find that people are more than willing to let you work part-time on a flexible schedule if you let them know that you are a college student looking for a job.
